Ahhh, has it been a year already? Posts from PopCulture Shock and Sporadic Sequential have reminded me that cancellations are not going away. That said the number of pubs that continue to put titles on “hiatus” have dropped. At the same time with an increase in publishers and an extremely competitive market (with shelf space not increasing at the rate of growth) the potential is still there.
Fans of the titles listed should have maintain hope, though. Changes in the industry have shown that dead licenses can find new life with transfers. A handful of MagGarden titles have moved from ADV (and one from Gutsoon!) to Tokyopop. ICE Kunion’s catalog was picked up by Yen Press. Bobobo was given a new chance by the powerful Shonen Jump line. Speaking of SJ, Slam Dunk returns in its original SJ format but now in English. One Pound Gospel is getting a re-release this summer. Parasyte and CLOVER were not on hiatus but those licenses moved from TP to Del Rey and Dark Horse, respectively.
A realistic look at the industry will show that the majority of titles on this list had no hope and will not be re-released any time soon. The number of hits on this list is around 15% (and that is being generous). Examples are…
Cannon God eXXaXion
Duck Prince
Gamerz Heaven
Geobreeders
Gunslinger Girl
Louie the Rune Soldier
Otogi Matsuri
Slayers
Spriggan
Those Who Hunt Elves
Urusei Yatsura

You’re Under Arrest
Manhwa continues to make up a good chunk of these titles. Manhwa still doesn’t have much of an image in this market. Korean titles do not have the support of animation. And even when they do, in the case of Shin Ongyshi (from Shogakukan), certain pubs are hesitant to pick up the titles.
Another trend I have noticed is the high rate of seinen titles on this list. Shoujo titles are hardly ever canceled and publishers seem to be aware that shoujo readers tend to stick with their series more than shounen and seinen readers.
Equally troubling is the sluggish pace that publishers FanFare, DramaQueen, CPM/BeBeautiful are releasing their manga. As much as it frustrates me, I can accept Last Gasps snails pace for Barefoot Gen (that series restarted a few months back). However, distribution issues cannot be the only thing holding back the other three pubs.
I want to thank Ultimo Spalpeen for finding some of the old cancellations from the 80’s and 90’s.
Finally, some of the titles on this list may in fact be on hiatus. As publishers rarely officially send notices informing readers of those changes I have included titles that have not seen publication in a while and have not had new solicitations. This list does not include defunct publishers or light novels (let me know if you want those added).
added… Neconoclasm, Chunchu, Bride of the Water God,

I tried to wheedle ADV a bit at Anime Boston, only to realize I didn’t have much to say. They seemed to assume me that Yotsuba& was still coming out, and asked abruptly if I had any specific questions. I mumbled something about their website and ran away after that.

Thanks for doing this– I always like to know what happened to series.
Re-releasing Clover is weird, though. I still have the originals, but I guess they’re long out of print. They’re pretty– dust jackets and all.
Pretty sure “Kodomo no Jikan” was officially dropped before v. 1 could be released. This would have been several months ago.
And wouldn’t it be nice if BeBeautiful would speak up instead of hiding as fans wonder where the rest of Viewfinder is?

Chris Johnston (former Newtype senior editor) on the status of Yotsuba:
“I don’t think there’s been any announcement of the sort, but ADV Manga’s been shut down for months now even though they never removed the solicitations for 2008. Your best bet is to rally around someone else picking up the license.”

TOKYOPOP confirmed that Lupin III: World’s Most Dangerous is being dropped after volume 9.
CPM released 5 volumes of Geobreeders before dropping it.
Otherwise, nice yet very depressing list. I’m hoping against hope that Yotsuba is just on hiatus because otherwise there’ll be heck to pay…
May 20 2008
I’m curious about the long-canceled Lycanthrope Leo. From the description in Manga: The Complete Guide, it sounds like the kind of weirdly awesome title that we need more of… Has anyone read it? Is it worth seeking out on eBay, or did it deserve 1,000 years in licensing purgatory? Inquiring minds want to know.
May 20 2008
You should probably add Scary Books and Reiko the Zombie Shop to Dark Horse’s list. I think those ones have been stalled for at least a year. I don’t think either of them have hope, but I’d dearly love to see at least Scary Books start back up again since Umezu series seem to be working okay for Viz.

Err—Ledoux and Ranney, _The Complete Anime Guide_ *2nd Ed.*, p. 78. ^_^;
May 21 2008
Let me try this again, this time with shorter posts (since my original post was swallowed by the aether):
“Aera 88″ (sic) was published through issue 42 in comic form
http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?title=04498309786
which IIRC was equal to chapter 5 of volume 8 (and bit) of the tankoubon (Ledoux and Ranney, _The Complete Anime Guide_ 2nd Ed., p. 78). Similarly, _Cobra_ was released in 12 issues of 48 pages each (= three tankoubon?).
http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?title=17684209704
Similar considerations apply to _Getter Robo Go_, _Justy_, and _the Ultraman_ (sic).
May 21 2008
Great point Doc. The list only counts graphic novels but you are right a number of these series had a number of chapters published in floppy or magazine format.
IE Club 9 ended in Super Manga Blast but the last volume was not collected in a GN.
I don’t want to amend that this year, but I will definitely look into it next year.
May 21 2008
I posted a couple more times, but they also got swallowed. Let me try it without the links:
Other misspellings in the Viz list: “Voyers” for “Voyeurs” amd “Spirggan” for “Spriggan” (the latter was also released under the title “Striker”:
(See Mile High Comics’ site)
Lastly (unless I misunderstand the purpose of this article), there are Sun Comic Publishing’s titles: _High School Agent_, _Ragnarok Guy_, and _Raika_ (which have been “on hiatus” since Sun went away in the early 1990s)
(See Mile High Comics, plus ANN’s Encyclopedia, which has the first and third titles.)
A poster on Anime on DVD’s Manga News & Information forum mentioned that ComicsOne’s _Bride of Deimos_ is also missing from the list.
May 21 2008
Lastly (unless I misunderstand the purpose of this article), there are Sun Comic Publishing’s titles…
Yeah, actually the last line before the list starts states…
The list does not include defunct publishers or light novels.
I’ll fix those typos though ^_^v
