Sorry to be the Grinch this winter but cancellations were once again a topic of conversation this month. And with so many changes over the last half-year I thought it was about time I updated the cancellations list again. Bring on the gloom!!
A number of Broccoli Books titles were added to the list with their dissolution in November. Most of TOKYOPOP’s titles are not confirmed but after reviewing their release lists through August 2009, I thought I decided to add the titles listed as most of them will be in hiatus for around a year based on that information. UDON also makes the list as some of their manhwa titles have been in limbo since early fall with no restart in sight. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a ROBOT 6 solicitation in the coming months as that’s been a 6 month a release project for them.
A little bit of analysis on the updated list continues to support that manhwa is really struggling to find hold in this market. Manhwa is struggling on all fronts whether it is seinen or shojo. Now this should not be shocking as manhwa, relative to manga, is still new to this market. Manhwa has been around in North America for less than 10 years and manga is going on 30. The lack of media mix connections with manhwa are also contributing to its lack of appeal to the casual reader. Black God, technically a manga (published by SquareEnix), may help to expand this market particularly if publishers like Infinity can make the connection of Park SungWoo = Black God = simultaneous release Anime with their readership. Manhwa being a large part of Yen’s Yen+ magazine may also increase exposure and help them decide which genres and art styles to pursue in the future. At the same time, I think it would be a good idea to use surveys to figure out which titles to re-release in GN format. If a series is not well received Yen could easily run it in the mag and not risk losing money on a print run that may not go very far.
Japanese publisher MagGarden continues to be the biggest loser over the last few years. Many of their titles were dropped by ADV a few years back. TOKYOPOP rescued a handful of those titles and then decided to pick up some more only to struggle with these titles as well. MagGarden’s licenses are a strange mix of shoujo, seinen and shounen drawn by women (which is similar to how Enix, now SquareEnix, has operated their GFantasy and GanGan Wing lines). It’s really hard to figure who’s supposed to read their titles. And in my experience MagGarden titles tend to be design heavy and light on character development. Even their best seller ARIA isn’t much of a character based title as it is a slice of life travel log. Still there are some gems from MG. Elemental Gerad and Harukaze Bitter Pop are worth a look (even if the latter is in limbo right now).
One shocking trend of note is how many shoujo titles have been dropped. Shoujo appeared to be the safest demographic but with TOKYOPOP and UDON’s additions it is now showing much more weakness. Even titles from the Kings of Shoujo Hakusensha have found their way to the list. Hakusensha is by far the most popular choice for shoujo by publishers, as CMX, Viz, and TOKYOPOP have gone to their well in the past (Digital Manga and Comics One have as well for non-shoujo titles).
Finally here is a list of my most wanted titles on this list (along with who I’d like to see pick them up). Got to say some of the titles are pretty impressive and with a little bit of work many of these series could find an audience out in this market…
- Yotsuba&! (Seven Seas)
- Kizuna (BLU)
- Disgaea II (Yen Press)
- the Finder Series (MediaBlasters)
- Duck Prince (Del Rey)
- Gunslinger Girl (Yen Press)
- Yebisu Celebrities (Aurora)
- Bambi and Her Pink Gun! (Last Gasp)
- Sweet Cream & Strawberries (Aurora)
- Ga-Rei (Go Comi)
- Seraphic Feather (Dark Horse)
- DVD (Go Comi)
- Nosatsu Junkie (CMX)
- Zig Zag (Viz Media)
- Pilgrim Jager (Dark Horse)
(The following should get a nod too but I think their art (either too old or weird) will hurt their chances: You’re Under Arrest, PatLabor, Pineapple Army, Urusei Yatsura Yubisaki Milk Tea).
Aurora picking up a BroBooks title shows how transfers can still happen. But I am sure that contracts and licensors more often than not may slow down the process.
Argh, Yotsuba should make a killing for whoever gets it away from ADV.
Here is the list of dread. As usual, these titles are “hiatus” and most have not been officially cancelled by their license holders or their original licensors. And if you have any info on these titles or any titles I am missing please feel free to share it in the comments.

What a depressing list. For Kindaichi Case Files, by the way, only 17 volumes have been published. Volume 18 was solicited for an October release but never materialized.
December 26 2008
I wondered about this last year, but I think the Del Rey version of “A Perfect Day for Love Letters” is complete in two volumes. The page count between the two is around 500 pages, which seems to more or less match up with the total number of pages in the Japanese version of the title. For some reason, the first two Japanese volumes were extremely short, and the second US volume a bit longer than usual.

December 28 2008
B’t X is only 16 volumes long, not 16+. Since 15 volumes have already come out, that means they only need to publish the last…although I’m not sure if they’re planning to.

“And in my experience MagGarden titles tend to be design heavy and light on character development.”
You said it!
What’s up with all the Nazi uniform fetishism lately, too? (07-Ghost, MomoTama, etc.)
December 28 2008
-Jun: Thanks for the info. Hard to tell what was released over the fall or not as a number of titles were solicited and some came back with new prices; others just quietly disappeared.
I’ll change that.
-Connie: Interesting. I haven’t bought the Japanese versions but according to my people at Kodansha there should be 570 pages total for KoiBumi; while Del Rey released 510 pages. On top of that George Asakura has tossed in a couple of KoiBumi chapters in between working on seinen manga for IKKI since 2005.
-Chris: I cannot confirm this yet, but I believe the Last Uniform is still in play by Seven Seas. I’ll try to ask my bosses over there about the status of that. First Love Sisters does look like a goner…
-Jason: I don’t understand why people are in love with MagGarden. I’d rather go with Ichijinsha myself (even over SquareEnix). But then again 07-GHOST is an Ichijinsha title so they aren’t perfect either.
January 1 2009
I have been waiting for a response about the status of A.I. Revolution from the people at Go! Comi, so that’s possible a candidate for the list.
DMP: Enchanter
there are also a few title under the DramaQueen Romance line that are not completed as well: Audition, 8mm, Promise are three of them. And there are also some older titles, but are you not including them in your list?

-naneko-chan: the Enchanter is still running and will return in February. That series is just going slower than most series.
I also never include titles from publishers that are dead for more than a year. So next year’s list will no longer have CPM and BeBeautiful. That’s why ComicsOne, Ironcat and Gutsoon! are not on the list.
AI Revolution is scheduled to be in stores… This week. It is in stock at Amazon right now.

AI Revolution is in stock in Amazon right now? That is shocking since even the Go! Comi website doesn’t know about any of them being published since June. In October the response was “we are in the process of rescheduling this title….we will post an announcement when we work out the details”. So I just asked them again last week. The response from the forum moderator is that they were on vacation until next week and then the admin would ask around for info. They also have a disclaimer about Amazon release dates being “almost always wrong”. They are doing a good job keeping up to date on their main site, so I doubt this is wrong. I also just checked Amazon and all I see are Vol. 1-4 that were released up to June 2008, and Volume 5 & 6 with release dates of August and October 2008, but they are not actually available.

According to this page from Amazon A I Revolution #1 is in stock…

Now that might be wrong, but the RightStuf.com also has volumes in stock

Barnes & Nobles also has volume 1 in stock

Borders has volume 1 in stock also

So, I don’t know what to say, I feel this information pretty much confirms that something is out there. Now I might be wrong but I think they may have been talking about volumes 5+. Those seem to be up in the air. I’ll make sure to keep an eye on that series, though. And if I don’t see any changes by May I’ll make sure to add it to the list.

Um
Sorry.
It is true, volumes 1-4 of A.I. Revolution are in stock in many places. What I was said was confusing, I agree. (Once I’ve posted, I can’t edit, I’m sorry!) They were published in 2008. It’s volume 5 + 6 and later that are the problem, and have been postponed since August. I am sorry if I wasn’t clear.

So, is Gatcha Gacha (Tokyopo) canceled or just on hold?

This list still depresses me.
