You cannot hate the game, as the game is blind to prejudice and it leaves judgement to the participants and their followers. Hating the player is easy cause players can be complete asses.
In volume 3 of REAL you have three asses who are on different paths in their lives. One is moving on, while the other two are struggling to get on their feet (literally in the case of Takahashi). And the only thing that gives them pause and hope is basketball. The game gives them a stage to shine. The game gave them a chance to get closer to their family. The game has provided their best memories in their young adult lives. And now the need to get back on the court is what will give them strength.
The game of life is REAL. The game can be cruel, and it can hurt. And if the game is taken from player, they will quickly realize that every match is worth is every hi and low.
Dangit!! How come no one is reading this. It might be the best comic out there right now.
